Let me take the obvious issue head on: losing stinks. But after the Wildflower victory for the residents, there was no way I could let Susan Haynie go unopposed. I am not perfect, but the personal attacks that were launched against me from PO Boxes in Tallahassee were the worst in the history of Boca Raton. And while serious questions were raised about the way our city is run and the business dealing of our mayor, the media and the political elite were incredibly silent .
Life goes on, however, and the last two months were but a moment in our city’s history. Our fight? It continues. And the lack of media coverage, the lack of political outrage reminds us all how important BocaWatch is for informing residents about the on-going significant local governance issues.
So where are we?
With Andrea O’Rourke earning a convincing victory in the March 14th Boca Raton election, and Scott Singer winning re-election for a second term, the center of effort on the City Council has shifted. While we will not experience a sea change in the coming days, it is clear to most observers that the public’s concern about the way city hall does business has reached a tipping point.
What was once a small group of concerned neighbors became BocaWatch. And today, borne from the successes last November for the Wildflower and this March in the city elections, we are experiencing a true groundswell of public involvement.
In fact, it is a movement.
The core of this movement is BocaWatch, and I am proud of what we built together. I stepped down as editor during the campaign to avoid any appearance of conflict, but I am back at the helm again and excited about the future.
The thousands of readers of BocaWatch may have different views of the city, and that is a good thing. And we cannot just be about development, the challenges we face in our community and in city hall are more than that. Recent revelations about our mayor and dealings in city hall prove that.
So as we turn the page with a new city council and significant changes soon to come in Boca Raton’ senior management, I am ready to stand with you, collaborate with you – and make Boca Raton better with you.
